Dr. Maria Montessori believed that the minds of young children are uniquely and powerfully absorbent. Teachers in the prepared environment learn how to assist the young child’s education by careful attention, observation and guidance to that which the child is drawn to and engages in. The trained teacher asks the child questions to better understand how the child is thinking about the activity. Learning occurs as the child actively engages in the learning process and is enthusiastic when the curiosity is supported, satisfied, and mastered. During these early years children are innately self-directed, enthusiastic learners, engaging with their environment and how they can affect it. Like Dr. Montessori, we believe that providing this environment and child-centered curriculum will build a solid foundation for lifelong learning.
The Blooming Stars Education Center curriculum will be guided by Montessori education tenets and the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks (which consist of developmentally appropriate objectives and principles), coupled with our own unique features. Compared to the traditional education approach, the teachers are active givers of information and children are passive receivers, Blooming Stars Education Center encourages children to teach and help each other. Children can find what they need and learn at their own pace. The core curriculum of a Montessori classroom is separated into four main areas, sensorial, practical life, language, and mathematics. Along with these four areas, we will introduce cultural, scientific, and historical subjects such as geography, geology, zoology and botany, etc.
The Cornerstones of the Montessori Method
◆ Respect: children are respected as unique individuals
◆ Absorbent Mind Children possess an acute sensitivity for absorbing and learning from the environment.
◆ Purposeful Activity: children have a deep love and need for real-life activities. When they are “playing” with practical life materials they are indeed “working” to learn about the world around them.
◆ Self-Discipline
